Key activities:
"Hot" Combustion
The characterization of the combustion process and the release of pollutants is in the research focus of the working group „Combustion Technology“ that primarily deals with:
- Solid fuels such as biomass, waste, substitute fuels, bio-charcoal, etc. in a:
-> Fixed bed (acronym KLEAA) and in grate furnaces
-> Fixed Bed gasifier KLEAA - Liquid and solid fuels in a Rotary kiln
- Pulverized fuels (biomass, biogenic coke, substitute fuels, coal) in a power plant combustion chamber with dust firing BRENDA
with oxyfuel conditions (O2 / CO2-atmosphere) and with air.
"Cold" Combustion
Development of a novel Carbon Fuel Cell (DCFC) using carbon fibres and bio coke as fuel source.
Next key-point activity areas are numerical simulations of:
- Fixed bed structure on a grate -> KLEAA‐CODE as part of FuBe®
- Flue gas path simulation in a combustion system -> SoWaCo®
- Pyrolysis phenomena during the combustion process
In cooperation with the Departnemnt Pyrolysis / Gas Treatment electrostatic processes for the separation of aerosols from pyrolysis gases are developed to optimize oil qualities.

FuBe® (Fuel Bed)
With FuBe® you get from one source the relevant information about your thermal process, the fuel and its thermal behavior in your plant as well as information about an optimal design and an efficient operation.
FuBe® is built modularly, so a customer‐focused characterization
of the fuel and its behavior in the plant as well as the presentation of the results, which fulfills the customers’ requirements, could be assured.

SoWaCo® (Solid Waste Combustion)
With the numerical tool SoWaCo® it is possible to identify the potentials
for optimization in an existing boiler. For the design of new boilers SoWaCo® can support the dimensioning of the plant, e.g. for different loads or changing fuels.
SoWaCo® is built modularly, so a customer‐focused characterization of the fuel and its behavior in the plant as well as the presentation of the results, which fulfills the customers’ requirements, could be assured.
